How this Singapore overtime calculator works and who it is for

This calculator turns clock-in and clock-out times into payable overtime using the rules Singapore employers are expected to apply. Enter the standard working window — the default is 08:30 to 17:30 — then the actual hours worked. The tool ignores overtime below the 30-minute threshold, rounds qualifying time to the nearest 15 minutes, applies the 1.5x hourly rate to the overtime portion, and produces a line-by-line summary you can download as a branded PDF for your payroll file.

Under the Employment Act, an employee covered by Part IV who works beyond their normal hours must be paid at least 1.5 times their hourly basic rate of pay. Part IV covers workmen earning up to $4,500 a month and other employees (excluding managers and executives) earning up to $2,600 a month, with the overtime rate for that second group capped at a salary level of $2,600. Contractual overtime arrangements can be more generous, never less.

The tool is built for HR executives and business owners preparing payroll for shift teams, operations supervisors approving claims, and employees who want to check a payslip before raising a question. Three mistakes account for most disputes: using gross salary instead of basic pay to derive the hourly rate, rounding every short overrun up instead of applying the threshold, and forgetting that rest-day and public-holiday work follows different rules entirely rather than plain 1.5x.

Figures are computed in your browser for a quick, private check — treat the output as a working estimate and confirm final payroll against your employment contracts and current MOM guidance.

Frequently asked questions

How is overtime pay calculated in Singapore?

The standard formula is hourly basic rate of pay × 1.5 × hours of overtime worked. The hourly basic rate is derived from the monthly basic salary, not gross pay including allowances. Work on rest days and public holidays is compensated under separate rules rather than the plain 1.5x overtime rate.

Is overtime pay mandatory under the Employment Act?

It is mandatory for employees covered by Part IV of the Employment Act: workmen earning a basic monthly salary of up to $4,500, and non-workmen (excluding managers and executives) earning up to $2,600. Employees outside Part IV are paid overtime only where their employment contract provides for it.

Why does the calculator ignore short overruns?

It applies a 30-minute threshold, so time worked beyond the standard window only becomes payable overtime once it passes half an hour. Qualifying overtime is then rounded to the nearest 15 minutes, which is a common and defensible payroll convention.

Is there a cap on overtime hours in Singapore?

An employee should generally not work more than 72 hours of overtime in a month. Exceeding that requires an exemption from the Ministry of Manpower.

Can I keep a record of the calculation?

Yes. Download the summary as a branded PDF and attach it to your payroll working file. The calculation runs entirely in your browser, so nothing about your staff or salaries is transmitted to us.

Doing this calculation manually every payroll cycle?

A calculator helps for one employee. When it is thirty of them every month, the rules belong in a system that logs the hours, applies your policy automatically and produces the payroll export. That is exactly what our HR analytics and workforce builds do.
